Donald Maxwell (1877 – 1936) was an accomplished artist, who came to the public’s attention with his dramatic sketch, The Battle Fleet off Southend, published by the Daily Graphic in 1909. He thereupon embarked on a career as a naval artist and correspondent.
However after the war he turned his attention to the landscape, first in his beloved Kent, but it was not long before he toured Essex, writing and illustrating two books: Unknown Essex and A Detective in Essex. The illustration shown here comes from the former.
