Yachtswoman drowns in Benfleet Creek

Press reports on the death of Eileen Howard

In March 1929 the wife of Sidney Howard, who was later to sail his boat Pacific Moon to Tahiti, was found dead off Leigh. There  were no witnesses to this sad event, but the most likely explanation, bearing in mind that her dinghy was found alongside another  boat, is that she fell in the water while attempting to transfer to this other motor boat. The news went national with reports in the Western Morning News as well as the Essex Chronicle.
