Benfleet Greys Baseball Team

1951-1952

Although Baseball was established in this country before the Second World War, it became very popular in the 1950’s and 1960’s, probably as a result of so many American troops being billeted over during and after hostilities ended.

Benfleet was no exception and had its own team known as Benfleet Greys, and the following photograph taken around 1951-1952 shows the team at that time.

  • Second left was Dennis (Danny) Penfold, he was my father and a friend of Vern Campbell who if I remember correctly lived on the High Road left- hand side past the Co-op. My father used to take me to matches when I was small.

Some of the old kit ended up with the Mormons who tried to start a youth team in Benfleet much later.

  • Vern Campbell and I were the founder members of the Benfleet Greys. Unfortunately I had to do my duty in the armed forces so didn’t get to play much. Cannot remember most of the names but the chap in the centre was Tony Johnson a member of the local police. I do have a photo somewhere presenting flowers to Verns mother in the recreation ground after a game. Vern and his family moved back to Canada, we did visit him but he wasn’t too well. Lost contact with him eventually.
