Love and Hate
I love the charming countryside of Benfleet by the creek;
But hate to see its spoilation almost week by week.
I love th’exotic Londoner, his non-chalence and breeze;
But hate his silly penchant for felling lordly trees.
I love the way he keeps his house, his ground, his garden plans;
But hate his marring vacant plots with bottles, crocks and cans.
I love to think of Benfleet with its minimum of rain;
But hate the nasty sticky stuff these minima attain.
I love to trudge the broad highway where riders go awheel;
But hate to plod the branching paths with clods on toe and heel.
I love the sturdy winter, the freezing and the snows;
But hate the crimson patches they paint upon the toes.
But best I love the glorious sun, green trees and dappled cloud;
There is no hatred in me then, I want to shout aloud.
