On the Canvey Community Archive is a very interesting article by Robert Hallman on a gravestone for a Susanah Howard in St, Marys Churchyard. It is unusual as it gives not only her name, birth and death dates but also where she died:

“Susannah Howard. Born at Benfleet 1 June 1820. Died 29 October 1871 at 17 East Lane, Bermondsey, London.”

The article uses this as a stepping off point to explore the history of a family of Thames Hoymen and Lightermen who were resident in Benfleet. It is an article well worth viewing.
