Armed Forces Day Flag Raising

Raising the flag in the downpour on Monday 20th June 2016

After the naming of Sapper Ellison Way the Mayor and Sappers came back to the Council Offices to raise a flag for Armed Forces Day. The weather was poor and the traffic was heavy which meant it was difficult to record a video and especially record any sound but road noise. The Mayor’s Chaplain’s service got lost in the noise and is not included in the recording.

Unfortunately the gun for the salute arrived late due to heavy traffic and then could not be fired later on due to heavy rain. Also due to the weather the Mayor gave his speech in the atrium of the Council Offices.

The Mayor’s guests for the official parade included the High Sheriff of Essex, Mrs Lorna J Rolfe JP, and two Army officers: Lieutenant Colonel Richard Dixon-Warren (Joint Regional Liaison Officer East – 7th Infantry Brigade and HQ East – ‘The Desert Rats’) and Major Billings.

The flag party consisted of three Sappers from the Royal Engineers. Various youth and military organisations were also present.
