Fire Engine Crash

Bread and Cheese

On the 27th April 1984 one of Benfleet’s Fire Engines was rather over enthusiastic in responding to a call out on the way down Bread And Cheese hill.

Whilst we don’t know the actual cause of the crash we can see from these photographs the after effects on the pavement, front gardens.

In the following photograph we can just see the advertising hoarding for the Maharaja Indian restaurant which indicates how long it has been open for.

We can see that the fire engine received quite a lot of damage.

It looks like the car was a write off.

  • I watched this happen while I was painting the back of my house in Downer Road North. I went down to look and the fire engine had broken pipes in the green gas boxes. The firemen were pushing mud in the pipes to stop the gas flow. The fire engine landed on a skip on one of the drives.

  • Busbys was definitely there in March 1988 as we celebrated a relations 21st birthday there.

  • I found this in my loft, a picture card of Busbys .. it has to be from before 1986 as I moved to Devon 1986.

Its alittle card you used to get from pubs and hotels. I will try to add a photo

  • The restaurant was still Busby’s, see the sign in the background.

  • I think at the time this was Busbys restaurant, (or was it Buzby as in BT), ?? which was later struck by lightning and closed soon after.
