Died on the Aboukir

Stanley Moor Chiles was born on 9 April 1885 to Walter and Mary Chiles in London. By 1911 they were living in Benfleet. Stanley gives his address as “Bingley” (No. 105) Cumberland Ave but in 1911 he is shown as being in the Royal Navy. In 1918 his parents were still living at the same address.

He was a Leading Seaman on the HMS Aboukir  when it was torpedoed along with two other ships on 22nd September 1914 by German Submarine U9. 527 men lost their lives. He was the second person in Benfleet to die during the First World War. He was 29 years old.
