(14) Private Charles Albert Pearce

LaClytte and Ridge Wood

Private Charles Albert Pearce (14) was born in 1881 to Charles and Rosina Pearce in Stondon Massey, Essex. Before the war he lived in Benfleet where he was employed at the Hoy Inn.

He enlisted at Warley in March 1915 and was attached to the Machine Gun Section of the 10th (Battersea) Battalion of The Queen’s Royal Regiment (West Surrey). He was killed in action on 13th December 1916 in Flanders when returning from duty in the trenches in the LaClytte and Ridge Wood area. He was aged 34 years. There are notes are from the commanding officers records showing one other rank killed. They state:

Battn. Relieved by 32nd R Fusilliers. Relief 5.50 p.m. Move to Ridge Wood. 1 O.R. Killed 1 wounded.

This is most likely Private Pearce.
