Paul Cranfield Smyth

A prolific artist

Paul Smyth, 1883 – 1963, was a prolific painter with over 4,000 works to his name. Canvey was one of his favourite subjects, but so far I have only been able to reproduce one for this site relating to Benfleet. A further 8 examples can be found on the following site :

www.finchleygallery.com   However if anyone has further information or examples of his work, please get in touch with us.

Although he remained a Londoner, he often visited Canvey and indeed met his wife, Elsie Mullen, there. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1913 and was founder of the Finchley Art Society. During the first world war, he was seriously wounded at Passchendaele and spent nine months recuperating. Quite  how he fitted his career choice of teaching in, is anyone’s guess!
