(36) Alec James Arnup

The Battle of the Selle

Trooper Alec James Arnup (36) was born in Clapham in the 2nd Qtr. 1898 to William and Josephine Arnup. who lived at “The Homestead” (No. 62), Crescent Road. He was brought to Southend as a boy, where he was educated at St. John’s College. He was a member of St. Erkenwald’s choir and Sunday School.

He was a cadet in the Imperial Cadet Yeomanry (City of London), which he left to enlist in the Bedfordshire Regiment in early 1915. After training at Dovercourt and Colchester he became a musketry and Lewis Gun instructor and therefore did not go to France until 21st February 1918. He was transferred to the 10th (Grimsby Chums) Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regt on 17th October 1918.

His battalion took part in the Battle of the Selle, which took place between 17th and 26th October 1918. In a letter dated 17th October 1918 he wrote home saying he was recommended for good work in the line. It is almost certain that during this battle he was wounded. He died of these wounds in a hospital in France on 25th October 1918 aged 20.
